citybiz+ Paul Reed Smith’s Digital Harmonic Gets Strategic Investment From Caladan Capital

Paul Reed Smith’s Digital Harmonic has received a strategic investment from Dallas, Texas-based Caladan Capital, as the Maryland company pursues it ambition to push its advanced video, signal and image processing technologies to defense, aerospace and electronics industries.

The Columbia, Md., startup was founded in the 1980s by Smith, currently the founder and CEO of PRS Guitars. With his rock and roll roots, Smith started experimenting with novel approaches to measuring waveforms and ended up producing a technology that had significant applications in signal and imaging processing. The company says its technology also has applications in medicine that can unlock “novel pathways to diagnose and treat cancer.” Digital Harmonic has launched a suite of portfolio solutions and has dozens of additional R&D projects in the pipeline.

Key Defense Applications

In a 2022 interview with Citybiz Publisher and Editor Edwin Warfield, Smith recalled exploring the estuaries of Maryland, and narrated the rarely told story about how he connected with Carlos Santana. In recent years, Smith has launched a band called Eightlock, infusing Baltimore funk, DC Go-Go and New Orleans swing to create a new sound that is difficult to categorize. His PRS Guitars, based in Stevensville, Md., makes high-quality instruments that are used by some of the world’s most renowned musicians.

Caladan is led by founder Victor L. Vescovo, a private investor with over 30 years of experience. Vescovo had a 20-year stint in the U.S. Navy Reserve as an intelligence and targeting officer, retiring in 2013 as a commander. Notably, he conducted the first solo dive to the Titanic and also became the first person to explore the deepest points of all five oceans. Vescovo is also the co-founder of Insight Equity.
