New health center to enhance community access to vital services
Global construction and development firm Skanska announces the topping out of the Wake County Public Health Center, marking a significant milestone in the construction of this community resource. This achievement comes as part of Skanska’s commitment to excellence in delivering essential infrastructure projects.
In December 2023, Skanska began construction on the new,155,000-square-foot facility as part of the expanded Wake County Health and Human Services Campus. Alongside the health center, Skanska is also constructing a new five-level parking deck capable of accommodating over 500 vehicles.
Strategically located along Swinburne Street in Raleigh, the new campus will enhance accessibility for Wake County citizens seeking crucial social, health and economic assistance.
“Designed to streamline services and improve the overall visitor experience, the advanced facility will serve as a beacon of support for those in need,” said Mark Balling, executive vice president responsible for Skanska’s North Carolina and Virginia building operations. “The topping out of the Wake County Public Health Center underscores our unwavering commitment to provide accessible, high-quality structures in our own community and we are excited to have reached this significant milestone.”
The topping out ceremony marks the culmination of the structural phase in a construction project, typically the placement of a final beam or brick at the highest point of a building. The effort to achieve the topping out milestone at the Wake County Public Health Center project is highlighted by over 140,000 hours worked and 900 tons of structural steel used to construct the new facility.
To commemorate this occasion, Wake County Public Health representatives and construction workers gathered to sign the final beam as a symbol of the progress made since the project broke ground. Construction is on track for substantial completion in late 2025.
