Program offers on-the-job training and coursework to apprentices; helps restaurant owners strengthen their team with trained and qualified hospitality professionals
The Restaurant Association of Maryland (RAM), the only trade association that represents every segment of the foodservice industry in Maryland, is now accepting applications from restaurant employers and prospective apprentices to participate in its Restaurant Manager Apprenticeship program.
The Restaurant Manager Apprenticeship is a two-year program that includes on-the-job training and coursework. Upon completion of the program, an individual will be recognized as a journey worker and is qualified to work in a management capacity at a restaurant, and potentially other hospitality businesses.
“Across the restaurant industry in Maryland, there are many young people interested in working their way into management positions, but they aren’t sure how to navigate the process,” said Marshall Weston, President & CEO, Restaurant Association of Maryland. “This program offers a clear pathway to the management level for anyone who is interested in advancing in the restaurant industry.”
On-the-job training ensures that apprentices are being trained and exposed to a variety of real-life restaurant situations to provide the necessary skills to be a successful restaurant manager, along with the opportunity for future advancement and promotions.
The Restaurant Manager Apprenticeship program and corresponding coursework are available at no cost to the apprentice nor the employer because of grant funding secured by the Restaurant Association of Maryland. Apprentices are guaranteed pay increases while in the program and upon completion of the program, they are assured a minimum rate of pay of $25 per hour.
For young individuals looking to pursue a career path in restaurant management, this program offers the opportunity to begin training while still in high school, so upon graduating, they are able to move directly into the next phase of the apprenticeship program.
This a “competency-based” program, meaning that an apprentice will need to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the necessary materials and requirements of the program, rather than completing a rigid timeline of classes and exams.
