Sistrunk Community hub to host events throughout week highlighted by a Birthday Block Party on May 18
The L.A. Lee YMCA/Mizell Community Center in Fort Lauderdale is celebrating its second anniversary this month, and the South Florida community is invited to take part in the week-long bash to commemorate the occasion.
The celebration kicks off Monday, May 13 and culminates with a Birthday Block Party on Saturday, May 18 from 11 am to 3 pm outside the L.A. Lee YMCA/Mizell Community Center. Members and residents will enjoy festivities that include a live DJ, music, interactive games and activities, a bounce house, Zumba and hip-hop exercise demonstrations, prizes and giveaways, food and beverages from local food trucks and much more.
Leading up to the Block Party, the L.A. Lee YMCA/Mizell Community Center will host a Member Appreciation Day on Monday, May 13 as well as a special birthday bingo edition of the beloved Adult Game Night on Thursday May 16. As part of the Member Appreciation Day, the Y will be serving a complimentary continental breakfast for members from 7 am to noon. From 10 am to noon, there will be a Wellness Fair in the gymnasium at the YMCA, with vendors in the health and wellness industry, as well as activities for the entire family. Adult Game Night, which runs from 6:00 to 10:00 pm, is a free event and is held on the third Thursday of every month inside the Victory Black Box Theatre, located on the third floor of the L.A. Lee YMCA/Mizell Community Center.
“In two short years, the L.A. Lee YMCA/Mizell Community Center has quickly become a true hub in the community,” said Sheryl A. Woods, President & CEO of the YMCA of South Florida. “We are so proud to see how the community-shared vision with the YMCA has created a vibrant center that is very active. The comprehensive programs and services offered by the Y, as well as our business partners located within the center, have provided our community with endless opportunities to be involved. We’re proud to continue to be a part of this historic community, and we’re even more excited to be a part of its bright future. This will be one birthday party that people won’t want to miss!”
Since it’s opening in May 2022, the L.A. Lee YMCA/Mizell Community Center has given a glimpse into what a Y can be. In addition to serving hundreds of local families with memberships, the Y offers a plethora of programs, leagues and services that have helped revitalize the Sistrunk community.
In February 2024, the center celebrated the grand unveiling of five retail spaces in the Florida Blue Plaza fronting Sistrunk Boulevard with businesses and services for the local community. Salad Boss, Natural Trend Setters Hair Salon, Holy Cross Health, Optimal Health Pharmacy and a Fort Lauderdale Police Sub-station join existing onsite partners including Broward College, Delmar Arts Academy Preschool and Mosaic Co-Work, which are located in the L.A. Lee YMCA/Mizell Community Center and opened along with the center in 2022.
