Linden Ponds Residents Tutoring Employees

April is National Volunteers Month, and a group of residents at Linden Ponds, an Erickson Senior Living community in Hingham, Mass., volunteer their time in the resident-sponsored Linden Ponds Tutoring Program for employees at Linden Ponds. Currently, the group provides weekly one-on-one tutoring in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Citizenship Naturalization test preparation, and literacy/life skills for about 20 employees.

“Often a student needs ESOL along with preparation for citizenship, so both are sometimes provided to one student,” said Linden Ponds resident Jane Wagner. “We work closely with the Linden Ponds Human Resources Department which refers eligible employees and arranges work-release time for tutoring. We have also put together materials and created a resource library for our tutors. We’ve become a solid program.”

New resident volunteers meet with experienced volunteers to discuss adult teaching, tutoring experience, or training they may have or may need to ensure both the resident and student will succeed.

“We’re so fortunate that our residents dedicate their time, skills and passion to help our employees grow and achieve accomplishments that they may not have access to otherwise,” said Tina Zagarri, Linden Ponds’ human resources director. “This unique program assists Linden Ponds in our mission to be an employer of choice.”
