DORCAM’s “AUTONOMOUS” and Miguel Vazquez’s “Recycling and Art in a New Dimension”

To commemorate Women’s History Month in March for the seventh consecutive year, Doral Contemporary Art Museum (DORCAM) at CityPlace Doral along with Rockford Projects is pleased to announce its 2024 “Women of Vision” exhibition, “AUTONOMOUS,” celebrating women in the arts. Debuting Saturday, March 9, at 2 p.m., “AUTONOMOUS” will be on view at CityPlace Doral in Suite 115. DORCAM will celebrate the “Women of Vision” exhibition with a VIP Preview on Wednesday, March 6, from 6:30 to 9 p.m.
Curated by Lisa Rockford of the Rockford Projects, “AUTONOMOUS” is an exhibition centered around the complexities of being a self-actualized, self-aware, self-governing female today, despite societal pressures. Sixteen women artists were invited to participate including AdrienneRose Gionta, Amanda Madrigal, Camille Eskell, Cynthia Cruz, Donna Ruff, Gianna D, Jeanne Jaffe, Jill C. Weisberg, Judy Polstra, Laura Marsh, Rosemarie Romero and Helen Maurene Cooper, Selina Román, Shady Eshghi, Sibel Kocabasi and T.E.S. Works included address themes of dignity, introspection, self-acceptance and rebellion against objectification, tyranny or gender expectations.
In addition to the “Women of Vision” exhibition, CityPlace Doral is showcasing the groundbreaking works of local artist Miguel Vazquez with the solo exhibition, “Recycling and Art in a New Dimension.” On view from March 6–Aug. 31, Vazquez will showcase five sculptures at the Oasis experience at CityPlace Doral’s Fountain Plaza made entirely from recyclable materials.
Vazquez has pursued a new and innovative approach to art that places an emphasis on sustainability and the preservation of the planet, two vital statements that are crucial in today’s world, where the importance of recycling cannot be overstated. It is a crucial step towards preserving our planet and ensuring a sustainable future. But what if recycling could also be a form of art? In Vazquez’s collection, recycling and art come together to create a new dimension of creativity and innovation. Using repurposed materials that would otherwise end up in landfills, from sculptures made of recycled metal to paintings created with reclaimed wood, the artist creates stunning works of art that not only look beautiful but also carry a powerful message, crafting a beautiful harmony between art and recycled materials. It’s not just about creating something visually appealing. Recycling and art also have the power to educate and inspire.
Guests are invited to view “Recycling and Art in a New Dimension” at The Oasis experience featuring a relaxing, open-air atmosphere for friends and family to indulge in grab-and-go bites from CityPlace Doral’s restaurants and enjoy South Florida’s beautiful weather. The Oasis incorporates Adirondack chairs, tables, umbrellas and oversized games such as Chess, Cornhole and Connect Four.

Lisa Rockford, founder of Rockford Projects, is an independent curator, artist, and educator with a definitive interest in contemporary, interdisciplinary approaches, new media, and the re-invention of traditional media and techniques. About Miguel Vazquez:
Juan Miguel Vazquez was born in a little city of Galicia, Spain, where he resided until the age of 11 and studied his elementary school years. At that time, he emigrated with his family to Montevideo, Uruguay, where he finished High School, he went to the School of Fine Arts until 1973. Simultaneously, he studied psychology and sociology at the Faculty of Humanities and Sciences. Between 1974 and1979 he studied psychodrama with Dr. Rojas Bermudez and philosophy in the State University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, where his family had relocated.
During that period, Vazquez used ceramics as a medium of artistic expression, exhibiting his works in diverse galleries in Argentina, Brazil, Peru and Uruguay. In 1980 he moved to Miami, Florida, where he is currently living. Since then, he has been dedicated to the design of artistic furniture and works in third dimensions, using an innovative technology created by himself. At the end of 1994, he started traveling to several countries of Latin America and Spain. Generated by a new state of mind , he created new artworks which reflect his new ideas . His new creations are full of energy. The surrealistic style permits us to find feelings from the Apocalypses and also related to birth. Every piece is a narrative structure that carries us to an act of self-reflection. The series “Television and Human Being”, presented for the first time at the Florida Museum of Hispanic and Latin American Art in Miami, Florida, is the fundamental part of the exhibition “Realism-Surrealism”. It will be also shown in other prestigious galleries, art fairs and other cultural events.
