GLS Capital Principals Recognized In 2024 IAM Strategy 300: Guide To World’s Leading IP Strategists

GLS Capital, one of the world’s largest private investment firms focused on litigation finance, announced that firm co-founders and Managing Directors Adam Gill and Jamison Lynch, and firm Principal Joel Merkin have been recognized in the 2024 edition of IAM Strategy 300: The World’s Leading IP Strategists.

GLS Capital Managing Director Adam Gill shared the following appreciation regarding the recognition:

“On behalf of GLS Capital, I along with my colleagues Jamie Lynch and Joel Merkin are honored to be named to the 2024 IAM’s Strategy 300 Guide to World’s Leading IP Strategists. We value and appreciate this recognition because GLS was built on helping patent owners protect their IP and supporting partnerships with transparency and integrity. We’re humbled that IAM has included GLS every year since our inception.”

The annual IAM Strategy 300 guide identifies individuals from diverse entities, including service providers, corporations, research institutions, and universities, “who are leading the way in the development and implementation of strategies that maximize the value of IP portfolios,” according to IAM (Intellectual Asset Management magazine), which is a leading source of worldwide news, analysis and data on the management of intellectual property as a key business asset.

IAM Strategy 300: The World’s Leading IP Strategists honorees are identified through confidential nominations online. Recognized individuals must have been nominated by at least three people from outside of their organization. The comprehensive research process also involves face-to-face and telephone interviews and other communications with senior members of the global IP community.

Gill has evaluated thousands of patent opportunities, which he leads for GLS Capital, and has underwritten and managed hundreds of millions of dollars of litigation finance investments. Prior to co-founding GLS Capital, he led patent investment teams at two of the world’s largest litigation finance providers. He previously was a partner in the patent litigation group at Kirkland & Ellis LLP in Chicago. He earned his J.D. from the University of California (UC) College of Law, San Francisco (formerly UC Hastings) and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of South Carolina.

Lynch leads GLS Capital’s investments in life sciences and special situations, including matters involving product development, regulatory approval and litigation regarding medical devices, pharmaceutical products, health care, and other life sciences matters. Previously, he was a principal at GKC, where he led life sciences investments, including those involving patent litigation, and later at Burford, which acquired GKC in December 2016. He also formerly co-led the global patent litigation team at Gilead Sciences, Inc. and was a partner at Mayer Brown, where he was actively involved in pharmaceutical patent litigation, patent prosecution, and due diligence in the firm’s Chicago and Frankfurt offices. Lynch earned his J.D. from the University of Wisconsin (UW) Law School and his Bachelor of Science from UW.

A registered patent attorney, Merkin is responsible for due diligence and monitoring of patent investments for GLS Capital. He uses his patent litigation experience and engineering background to evaluate patent opportunities, particularly in the high-tech space. He has worked with patents involving a wide range of technologies, including computer hardware and software, communication systems, consumer electronics, and medical devices. He has significant experience in all phases of patent litigation, including his previous work as a partner in the intellectual property litigation group at Kirkland & Ellis LLP in Chicago. He has deep experience with complex patent litigation before federal district courts, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, the International Trade Commission, and the Federal Circuit. Merkin earned his J.D. from the University of Illinois College of Law and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
