Rotary Club of Weston Presents $200,000 in College Scholarships to Area Students

For the 37th consecutive year, the Rotary Club of Weston recently awarded more than $200,000 in college scholarships to students graduating from Cypress Bay High School, Western High School, Sagemont School, Children’s Harbor and HANDY at their annual Scholarship Breakfast.

68 students were awarded scholarships. Scholarship gifts started at $250 all the way up to full 4-year scholarships. 6 Florida Prepaid scholarships were awarded, including 2 full 4-year scholarships covering tuition and fees.

18 students of the month honorees (9 from Cypress Bay High School, 9 from Western High School and a student of the year from Sagemont Preparatory School) received a $250 scholarship.

Recipients are selected based on scholastic achievement, community service hours, and activities with the major emphasis placed on financial need.

“I know how important it is to have a helping hand, I think we can all remember someone who has made a difference in our lives,” said Michael Freedland with Freedland, Harwin and Valori, PL, the Golf Classic Title Sponsor. “Thanks to our amazing sponsors, Rotary Club members and the community we are able to provide these gifts to dozens of bright students in our area.”

There was a special award in memory of Aden Perry, the heroic Western High student who died trying to save another teen whose car submerged in a Sunrise lake. Beloved Cypress Bay guidance counselor Shari Bush was also presented with a special honor, as she retired earlier this year after more than 20 years at the school.

The Rotary Club of Weston is committed to participating in activities and raising funds for community and international projects. A majority of the $200,000 in scholarship money was raised through the FHV Law Golf Classic and Acuderm Drawdown Raffle, both in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Weston.
