Habitat for Humanity of Greater Plymouth to Begin Affordable Home Project in Manomet

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Plymouth (HFHGP; www.hfhplymouth.org), a nonprofit organization with a mission of providing decent affordable housing in the region, is pleased to announce that they have closed on a property in Manomet, which will become the site of their next home building project.

The small property on Indian Avenue currently includes a small unfinished cottage.  The cottage will be finished and expanded with a two-story addition to create a modest, three- bedroom home for a low-income family in need.  HFHGP received critical support from Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds through the Town of Plymouth’s Office of Community Development to acquire the property, and the organization is now actively finalizing the design plans with the help of pro bono architectural and engineering services.  The CDBG program is a federal grant program through the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) that addresses critical community development needs, including housing, infrastructure, and economic development.

“The Town of Plymouth is proud to support the growth of affordable home ownership in partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Plymouth” said Derek Brindisi, Plymouth Town Manager.  “The focus of the CDBG Program is to provide quality affordable housing that enhances community development.  The Town believes that this project will have a positive impact on our community and is an excellent use of those funds.”

Consistent with the traditional Habitat model, construction labor will be provided almost entirely by volunteers from throughout the community.  HFHGP is aiming to be ready to welcome volunteer crews by July; those interested in getting involved are encouraged to visit www.hfhplymouth.org/how-to-help/volunteer, or contact Volunteer Manager Lynn McManus at lmcmanus@hfhplymouth.org.  The application process to be considered for Habitat homeownership is not yet open for this location, but those interested in the opportunity are encouraged to visit www.hfhplymouth.org for an announcement.

“We’re very grateful to work together with Peggy Whalen and the Office of Community Development in a shared effort to create another affordable home ownership opportunity in Plymouth,” said Amy Belmore, executive director of HFHGP.  “Without question, there is a massive need for affordable options in our area, and too many families are dealing with destabilizing housing insecurity. Habitat is eager to get to work and we welcome involvement from the wider community.”
