Washington-Liberty High School’s ACE Mentor Program Gets Hands On at The Heming as Part of Construction Safety Week 2023

Skanska today welcomed ACE Mentor Program students from Arlington’s Washington-Liberty High School to The Heming, a 28-story, multi-family development under construction in Tysons, Virginia. Led by Skanska’s Brittany Otis, Senior Project Manager, the tour showcased Skanska’s commitment to supporting and building a strong safety culture in celebration of Construction Safety Week 2023.

Otis showed students the various stages of construction currently underway at The Heming and talked to them about the industry’s ongoing commitment to safety. The ACE Mentor Program is a a free, award-winning, afterschool program designed to attract high school students into pursuing careers in the architecture, construction and engineering industries, including skilled trades.

“Skanska integrates safety principles into everything we do from our Stretch & Flex program at the start of the day to our regular toolbox talks and safety demonstrations,” said Brittany Otis, Senior Project Manager at The Heming. “By mentoring the Washington-Liberty high school students we have an opportunity to lead the charge, instill a culture of safety in the next generation of construction workers and ensure that safety remains a top priority in the industry.”

Skanska originally began Safety Week in 2004 before joining over 30 construction firms to launch National Construction Safety Week in 2014. During the week of May 1 – 7, 2023 Skanska’s 28,000 employees and thousands of clients, subcontractors, suppliers and business partners are involved in activities focused on safety.
