Broward’s Health Business Solutions Celebrates 20 Years Providing Expert Solutions For Healthcare Providers

HBS has recovered more than $10 billion in denied claims since 2002

Broward Health Solutions (HBS), a national healthcare consulting company founded by CEO Ray Berry, is celebrating 20 years empowering hospital and healthcare systems through Revenue Cycle Management. The company’s primary focus is helping hospitals resolve denied claims and improving their systems to prevent them in the future.

“In the late 90s, I realized from my work in the healthcare industry that approximately 16% of all hospital insurance claims get denied by providers, which ultimately affects patient care,” Berry said. “I figured out a method of dealing with the payer system, so I took my life savings and started Health Business Solutions in 2002.”

Health Business Solutions is unique since it works with hospitals on a temporary basis, around 18-24 months. The goal is to help generate funds in the short term, but also educate the staff and create customized processes within each system so they are equipped to keep denial rates low long after the contract with HBS ends. Since its inception, the company has recovered more than $10 billion dollars in denied claims for hospitals and prevented another $30 billion dollars in denials.

“We are incredibly proud of what we have accomplished. When hospitals and other providers receive this money back, it ultimately benefits patients, who receive better healthcare and improves the community as a whole,” Berry added.

The HBS team is growing, going from 150 employees pre-pandemic to nearly 500 employees today, with plans to hire another 500 in the next 6 months. They are in the process of opening a second South Florida location, a 7-thousand square foot office located at 21 West Las Olas.

The company currently has 60 hospital contracts across the South, Northeast and Midwest and is planning to expand to the West Coast, which would include hospitals in California and Washington. HBS has staff in 37 states in four countries.

Berry has a long career in the healthcare space, working for Florida’s Health and Rehabilitative Services in the 90s, then becoming CEO of the Brown Schools, a group of 17 psychiatric hospitals for juveniles, where financial issues there gave him the idea for HBS.

Berry was appointed to the North Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners in 2018 by then Florida Governor Rick Scott. During that time, he played an integral role in reestablishing its prominence, helping Broward Health complete five years of compliance in just two years, improving the quality-of-care outcomes and saving the system from closure. After his role as chairman of the board, he was reappointed to the board by Governor Ron DeSantis
