Matthew Modine To Headline Fundraiser For Vietnam Grunt Museum

The Vietnam Grunt Museum and Lynd Living are proud to host Hollywood actor/filmmaker Matthew Modine on September 9th to headline a public event to raise money for the nonprofit museum.  Modine will showcase his Full Metal Jacket Diary, an exhibition of black-and-white photos he took on the set of the 1987 epic Vietnam movie.

The actor, who played a Marine grunt in Full Metal Jacket, and most recently appeared in the hit Netflix series, Stranger Things, will permanently donate 17 photos from his collection to the Vietnam Grunt Museum in Shavano Park where they are currently being displayed. The museum is located on the ground-floor of Lynd’s corporate headquarters built in 2019 at 4499 Pond Hill Road.

“When Matthew agreed to donate his photographs to the museum, we saw an opportunity to do something special for veterans, active military personnel and the greater San Antonio community,” said Lynd CEO A. David Lynd. “So, we have organized a big public event around the occasion and having Matthew come to here to talk about his collection and his role in the movie.”

At noon, there will be an invite-only meet-and-greet with Modine for local military veterans at the museum, followed by a lunch on the building’s third-floor rooftop area known as the Sunset Terrace.

Later that evening, Modine will address members of the public who will be treated to an outdoor screening of Full Metal Jacket. Food trucks and bar stations will be set up along with musical entertainment.  Since mental health is a big corporate initiative for Lynd, the company will set up a wellness center inside its office gym where people will have the opportunity to test out new technologies from Slow WaveinHarmony and Brain Tap that help combat stress and anxiety.    The public event starts at 5 p.m. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $10 for active military and veterans. The event will also be live streamed.

Money raised from donations, merchandise and corporate sponsorships will support the museum’s mission to assist veterans with a variety of needs.  Sponsorships range from $100,000 to $5,000 with each level offering different benefits. Vendor sponsorships are also available.  Those wishing to buy tickets, make a donation or become a sponsor, should visit https://one.bidpal.net/modine/welcome.

“Through his art and celebrity, I think Matthew has the power to attract and educate a whole new generation of people about the Vietnam War and the sacrifices so many young Americans made for our country,” said Christopher Jett, Lynd’s Chief Vision Officer. The photo collection will be displayed both in the museum and office building lobby.

The 1,400-square-foot Vietnam Grunt Museum tells the story of the role U.S. Army and U.S. Marine grunts played in the Vietnam War through artifacts, audio recordings, letters, news articles and documentaries curated from war veterans and their families. It was the brainchild of the company’s founder, Mike Lynd Sr. who served as an infantry officer in 1968-1969.

To this day, Lynd, Sr. continues to support veterans. He has hosted lunches for Purple Heart recipients, veteran nurses and school groups on the Sunset Terrace. He has partnered with The San Antonio Coalition for Veterans and Families, the GI Forum and V.A. to find permanent housing solutions for homeless vets.

“Lynd Living and the Vietnam Grunt Museum are pleased to present this event to the public,” said Michael Lynd, Sr. “It should be a fun evening, but also an opportunity to inform people what we are trying to accomplish with the museum. We want to tell the story of the War through the eyes of front-line fighters, who played a significant role to keep our country safe and free, but quite frequently, did not receive a warm welcome home.”

Participants at the event will have an opportunity to meet and interact with combat veterans.
