Massachusetts Maritime Academy Professor Nelson Ritschel’s Book On Renowned Irish Playwrights Reviewed In SHAW

Nelson Ritschel, Ph.D., professor and Chairperson of the Humanities Department at Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA; www.maritime.edu), a top-ranked public university with undergraduate degree programs focusing on science, engineering, technology, math, and business that blend academics and experiential learning, has received a glowing review in the scholarly publication “SHAW: The Journal of Bernard Shaw Studies” for his recently published book titled “Bernard Shaw, Sean O’Casey, and the Dead James Connolly.”

The 286-page book, published by Palgrave Macmillan, explores the Irish socialist leanings by dramatists Bernard Shaw and Sean O’Casey following the execution of James Connolly, an Irish Republican, Socialist, and trade union leader. Connolly was one of 16 executed by firing squad for his involvement in the Easter Rising of 1916.

In his review, Barry Houlihan, an archivist and lecturer at the National University of Ireland, Galway acknowledges Dr. Ritschel’s work as “a captivating thought-provoking and detailed account of the socialist and cultural history, of labor movements and the overlaps between Ireland and international contemporary events…”

“I am grateful to the Academy’s students whom I have explored Irish literature with for twenty years, whose enthusiasms inspired the research that led to Bernard Shaw, Sean O’Casey, and the Dead James Connolly,” said Dr. Ritschel.

“The entire Academy community is delighted and proud of the recognition Dr. Ritschel is receiving for his thought-provoking book,” said Rear Admiral Francis X. McDonald, USMS, president of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, noting that “the research required to author such a complex topic is prodigious.”
