The Arc Baltimore Honors Joan Twining

Joan Twining, Executive Director of the Rose of Sharon Equestrian School, is the recipient of a Special Appreciation Award from The Arc Baltimore.

Presented during The Arc Baltimore’s recent Annual Meeting and Awards Reception, the Special Appreciation Award honors individuals or groups who render truly outstanding assistance to the organization and the people with developmental disabilities whom The Arc supports.

The Rose of Sharon Equestrian School employs Molly Hayes, whom The Arc Baltimore supports. As Executive Director of the school, Twining has provided Molly with the opportunity to have a full and accomplished life working with horses in a stable environment with daily routines. This has helped Molly’s self-confidence, emotional well-being, and physical health – positive qualities which have had a direct impact on her overall health.

Twining has used her knowledge as a former special educator from Baltimore County Public Schools to plan a program for Molly, as well as the many students with disabilities who come to the Rose of Sharon for therapeutic horseback riding.

The Arc Baltimore’s Annual Meeting and Awards Reception recognizes those who have gone above and beyond in their service to The Arc, from community partners and volunteers to supported individuals and staff members. The 2022 Annual Meeting included award recognitions for Volunteer Service, Foster Care Excellence, Self-Advocacy, and School Inclusion, among others. In addition, The Arc Baltimore’s new board of directors and officers were elected during the Annual Meeting.

The Arc Baltimore supports people with developmental disabilities (autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability) to lead fulfilling lives with a sense of belonging, purpose, and meaningful relationships. The Arc provides employment training and support, day and residential services, family support and education, treatment foster care, respite care, public policy advocacy, and information and referrals.
