KPFF Delivers Rehabilitation of Brooklyn Hospital Center Emergency Department

KPFF Consulting Engineers, a leader in structural engineering design, recently completed a multi-phased effort to rehabilitate the Brooklyn Hospital Center’s Emergency Department. Funded in part by a New York State Department of Health Transformation Grant of $25 million, the KPFF-led project entailed a broad scope of civil and structural engineering services, including developing relevant documents to transform the Emergency Department into a state-of-the-art facility.

The project broke ground in July 2019 at an event attended by Gary Terrinoni, President and CEO of The Brooklyn Hospital Center, and several community partners and dignitaries. The scope of structural engineering work involved modifying the foundation and roof deck to facilitate replacing the faded brick facade with a new glass curtain wall. KPFF designed new framing to support new parapet walls, a new ambulance parking canopy, and new rooftop mechanical units.

The KPFF civil team successfully created a pedestrian-friendly zone while maintaining emergency vehicle access. This was achieved by removing and reconfiguring the existing emergency room drop-off and ambulance area along Dekalb Avenue. The result was a spacious and accommodating waiting area for patients and visitors and a lobby with direct access to the triage rooms. This new streamlined layout will greatly improve the hospital’s ability to see patients efficiently, conduct rapid assessments, and provide a welcoming environment. The added space will also significantly benefit other support services. The project was executed by an experienced team including NK Architects – Architecture & Interior Design; LF Driscoll – General Contractor; and Lilker Associates Consulting Engineers – MEP.

“When undertaking this project, KPFF knew that it was critical for the hospital to operate while also giving the staff ample room to conduct its important business,“ said Spiro Kremmidas, PE, SE, New York Principal of KPFF. “Our expertise in civil engineering was paramount in this regard. By developing meticulous and extensive plans prior to construction, KPFF was able to perform large-scale alterations and improvements without disrupting the flow of hospital traffic. As always, safety was our priority.“
