Former DOJ Commercial Fraud Attorney Denise Barnes Joins Honigman

WASHINGTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Honigman LLP is pleased to announce Denise Barnes has joined Honigman’s Investigations and White Collar Defense Practice as a partner in the firm’s new office located at 1440 New York Avenue NW in Washington, DC. She joins the firm after serving as a U.S. Department of Justice Trial Attorney in the Commercial Litigation Branch, Fraud Section. Barnes’ practice will focus on compliance, white collar and regulatory investigations, and complex commercial litigation.

“We are very excited to welcome Denise to our firm. She brings extensive experience in government investigations related to allegations arising under the False Claims Act, Anti-Kickback Statute, Stark Law, and FIRREA,” said J. Michael Huget, Chair of Honigman’s Litigation Department.

Honigman’s Investigations and White Collar Defense practice conducts sensitive internal investigations aimed at uncovering or resolving allegations of officer, director, trustee, or employee misconduct. In the course of internal investigations, Honigman lawyers provide counsel designed to avoid regulatory intervention and mitigate risk, and are also retained by corporate clients to represent employees, or groups of employees, identified in connection with internal, grand jury or other government investigations.

Honigman lawyers hold extensive criminal trial experience, including bank, mail, wire and securities fraud offenses, healthcare fraud and illegal kickback offenses, tax offenses, and other types of government program fraud.

Honigman helps clients navigate matters with the government agencies that conduct investigations resulting in criminal or other regulatory enforcement actions, including the Justice Department, IRS, FBI, Securities and Exchange Commission, Department of Labor, Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Health and Human Services, multiple state attorneys general offices and other state agencies.

Last year, former U.S. Department of Justice Tax Division head Richard Zuckerman rejoined Honigman’s White-Collar Defense and Investigations Practice Group in April 2021, following the addition of former United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan Matthew Schneider in February 2021.

Honigman launched its DC office in September 2020 with the addition of veteran intellectual property lawyer Harold Fox, Ph.D., who serves as Office Managing Partner. This month, the law firm moved into new offices across the street from the White House.

Prior to her time with the DOJ, Barnes was a litigation attorney with Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCoy, LLP in Washington, DC. She earned her JD from the Howard University School of Law and a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the University of Michigan.
