Selman Breitman Attorney Meka Moore Named First President of NAAIA Los Angeles Chapter

The National African American Insurance Association (NAAIA) has announced that Meka Moore, a partner in the Los Angeles office of Selman Breitman LLP, has been selected as the first president of NAAIA’s Los Angeles chapter, which was officially formed this month. NAAIA’s mission is to promote and enhance professionalism in a manner that leads to recognition in the insurance industry and career opportunities for the organization’s members.

“I am honored to serve as the president of the Los Angeles chapter of the National African American Insurance Association,” said Moore. “I recognize there has been a  disparity in opportunities available to people of color in the insurance industry in the past. Many in the insurance industry have voiced a commitment to closing that gap and increasing diversity in their companies.  My goal as president is to empower African American people in the insurance industry, especially the younger generation, and prepare them for professional success. I look forward to my continued involvement with this organization and to watch it grow.”

George Woods, NAAIA Vice Chair, said, “The NAAIA is excited to launch a new chapter in the Los Angeles  metropolitan area and looks forward to the opportunity to partner with other insurance industry and community organizations in Los Angeles. We have a chapter in this city, thanks to Meka Moore.”

Woods added,  “For approximately the past two years, under Ms. Moore’s guidance, NAAIA has had steady growth in its Los Angeles membership. Her efforts were also instrumental in landing NAAIA partnerships with two insurance organizations. Under Ms. Moore’s leadership as the chapter president, we see a great future ahead for this chapter and the metropolitan community it will serve.”

Moore is a member of Selman Breitman’s Insurance Coverage practice group. She helps insurance companies in coverage-related matters involving first- and third-party cases arising from a variety of policies, including property-casualty, errors and omissions, and general liability. She also has experience in defending insurance companies in disputes that involve complex extracontractual issues and suspected fraud as well as providing counsel to insurers regarding  coverage matters involving sexual abuse claims, including mass tort.  Moore is currently serving as national coordinating counsel for COVID 19 litigation.

Moore has been responsible for several published opinions in California, including the precedent-setting case of Rios v. Superior Court (mistakes of an insurance broker cannot be held against insurer) and Adams v. Superior Court (insurer’s notice of cancellation for non-payment is effective despite post-notice payment by insured to agent).

Neil Selman, founder and managing partner of Selman Breitman, said, “Meka’s vast experience in insurance law and her connections with the insurance industry, both locally and nationally, will prove valuable in her role as the leader of the local NAAIA chapter and as a mentor for the future generation of insurance professionals. Following Meka’s example, we have supported local activities of NAAIA and we are thrilled that Meka and her colleagues are building such a great organization.”
