Anonymous Donor Offers $50,000 Match Fundraiser for Global Learning Charter Public School’s Capital Campaign

Global Learning Charter Public School (GLCPS), a tuition-free public charter school that currently services 500 students in grades 5-12, has announced that an anonymous donor has offered to match, dollar for dollar, up to $50,000 in donations received through October 31st 2021.

The matching donation is in addition to a generous donation by this donor to the $8.5 million campaign. GLCPS broke ground on Tuesday, August 24, to launch an $11 million expansion and renovation project that will add an additional 18,000 square feet of classroom and collaboration space. GLCPS has partnered with the Diocese of Fall River to renovate the former convent building behind the current GLCPS building into a state-of-the-art education facility. The renovation project will bring a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) focused education center New Bedford and will also bring the nearly 100-year-old, historic building up to current building codes, improve the heating system, and install an elevator to meet ADA standards. This renovation project will not only expand classroom and collaboration space for GLCPS students and staff but will also support the expansion of community partnerships and adult academic programs fostering neighborhood and community relationships.

As a Public Charter School, GLCPS does not receive the same facilities support as traditional districts through local tax levies and the Massachusetts School Building Authority, ultimately placing the financial burden directly on the school. GLCPS will only be able to achieve the expanded campus with the support of the local community, individual donors and private foundations.

“We are grateful to have the opportunity to partner with an anonymous donor who is launching a challenge to the GLCPS community to support the One-School, One-Campus capital campaign. This anonymous donor will increase their personal donation up to an additional $50,000, if we as a community, are able to raise $50,000 from individuals by Halloween,” said Dr. Stephen Furtado, Executive Director of GLCPS. “This means, between now and October 31, your donation of any amount will have a double impact on the renovation and expansion project.”

About Global Learning Public Charter School

Open to New Bedford residents, Global Learning Charter Public School (GLCPS) is a tuition-free public charter school that currently serves 500 students in grades 5-12. Launched in 2002 as a Horace Mann charter school, GLCPS became a Commonwealth charter school in 2006. In order to generate a culture of personalization, the school setting and class sizes are deliberately small. Students, faculty and administration know each other well and teachers are able to tailor the curriculum to the needs and level of each student. GLCPS offers an exciting and challenging interdisciplinary curriculum that follows and builds upon the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. Students learn to work collaboratively in teams, use technology meaningfully in their coursework, strengthen all elements of their communication skills, as well as develop the necessary skills to become engaged and ethical contributors to a global society.  GLCPS capitalizes on the exceptional resources of the region (for example, marine sciences), and ties these resources to their curriculum and instruction. For further information please contact Amey Bissonnette, Director of Development, at 508-991-4105 or visit www.glcps.org.
