Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Dr. Lee Payne Joins Deloitte to Bolster Federal and Commercial Health Practices

Major General (Ret.) Dr. Lee E. Payne has joined Deloitte’s government and public services (GPS) practice to support the organization’s federal, nonprofit and commercial health clients. Payne, a board-certified emergency physician and internist, brings to Deloitte more than three-and-a-half decades of health care management experience and more than three decades of military experience.

Payne will add immediate value to a variety of Deloitte client engagements that are working to improve health care quality, patient safety, provider performance, data modernization, disaster response and supply chain optimization.

“It’s an honor to welcome Dr. Payne to Deloitte,” said Kevin Brault, principal, Deloitte & Touche LLP, and the leader of Deloitte’s federal health and veterans affairs work. “The depth and breadth of his health care management capabilities and industry insights will be a tremendous asset and strengthen the services we provide our government, nonprofit and private sector clients.”

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Payne led diagnostics and testing for the Department of Defense’s COVID-19 Task Force under the direction of the deputy secretary of defense, the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the under secretary of defense for personnel and readiness. In that role, he helped lead a comprehensive, government-wide effort to address the global public health emergency and strengthen federal information sharing about effective testing, contact tracing, variant surveillance, vaccination and public health policies.

“Dr. Payne’s experience at the highest levels of government and within the health care sector will bring extraordinary insights to our clients to help them solve their most complex technological and logistical challenges,” said Mike Canning, principal, Deloitte Consulting LLP and Deloitte’s GPS leader. “His strategic guidance and unmatched knowledge of the health care system will greatly expand and enhance the services we provide to government agencies and commercial organizations.”

Payne earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst Isenberg School of Management, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kentucky.
