Harkins Continues to Make Its Mark in the Charlotte Region

On Tuesday, September 7th, Harkins celebrated the groundbreaking of The Oliver in Charlotte, NC. A family-friendly event, over 20 guests and their families attended with a ceremonial photo-op, a tour of the future site, and a boxed lunch.

The first project with J Forrest Development, this new 222-unit market rate community will be located just off North Tryon at the corner of Gloryland Avenue and McGill Street adjacent to the Gloryland Baptist Church. The apartments will be spread across three four-story conditioned corridor buildings on a seven-acre site with surface parking that includes EV charging stations. The largest building will surround a pool courtyard with a lap pool and grill areas. A folding door system in the fitness area will connect the interior to the exterior via a greenspace to offer outdoor yoga and cycling classes for residents. The main corner of the building will feature rooftop accent lighting in a 5th floor clerestory space. “The rapid growth and transformation of Charlotte’s university sub-market is astounding and outperformed expectations during the challenging times of the pandemic,” says J Forrest Development Developer Jon Cohen. “We are very proud of this project and the hard work that both our design team and Harkins put forth to get us to this point. We are especially pleased to be the first to incorporate deeded affordable housing transit-oriented development housing in the area.”

The fourth project in the Charlotte region, Harkins is continuing to build its presence as a major general contractor in the area. “The Carolinas are a great market to be in,” says Harkins Project Executive Joshua Zilke. “Harkins is excited to be expanding our footprint here and building for both new and repeat clients.” The company recently completed The Mezzanine at Freedom in January of this year. This new residential project brought 185 affordable units to Mecklenburg County. Hailed as a new model for affordable housing, the project was a true partnership between private development and fair-based institutions in an area with considerable housing needs. Harkins has two projects underway. Along with The Oliver, the company is currently constructing Aspen Heights at University City, a new student housing development that will offer 730 beds in a mixture of apartments and townhome units.

Harkins’ Southeast regional office is currently located in the Tompkins Toolworx Building within the South End community of Charlotte.
